GREENER SHIPPING - SERVICE DESIGN MASTER THESIS
Challenge
The way our packages are delivered isn't sustainable. Consumers have little influence. How can online shoppers be empowered to make shipping greener?
Approach
Using a co-creative approach and service design methodology, create design interventions for a future where users and non-users can influence how packages reach them.
ON E-COMMERCE AND DELIVERY
“Consumers have limited possibilities to influence the greening of distribution.
One reason is the limited communication between logistics services, e-retailers and consumers.”
(Sallnäs, 2005)
CO-CREATION AND FUTURE DESIGN
I designed co-creative exercises to trigger discussion around sustainable shipping.
A key theme was: if you could shape how deliveries are made in your neighbourhood, what would you do? Can deliveries be improved through collective action?
CO-CREATIVE ROLEPLAY
Here, two volunteers are acting as neighbours. If your neighbour asked you to receive a package for them, would you? What would that conversation look like? Is it socially feasible?
A discussion followed the exchange, revealing what each neighbour needs to feel comfortable with accepting or asking the favour.
START PROTOTYPES THE ANALOG WAY
To immerse users in different scenarios, I created prototypes and trigger materials both digitally and on paper.
Using paper was a great way to create together but also center the discussions on ideas, rather than look and feel.
SERVICE DESIGN INTERVENTIONS
The outcome of the project was a set of interventions in the package journey. They offer greater citizen and consumer influence on how packages are transported.
SERVICE ILLUSTRATION
The illustration shows the interventions along the package journey, from order, through transit to final delivery.
